Technical Info for Humber Streaming
WHAT’S NEEDED
- Humber broadcasts require a Cable modem or DSL Line with a minimum speed of 384Kbps for Medium Quality and 768Kbps for High Quality.
- Minimum Windows Media Player 9.
- Ensure WMP files are associated with Windows Media Player.
- For Mac, minimum VLC Media Player Version 8.6.9d.
UPGRADING & FILE ASSOCIATION
To Update Your Media Player
- Click here to update Media Player.
- Under the "Select Version" drop down menu, select player 9, 10 or 11 for your operating system.
- If you are using a MAC, select "PLAYER 9" for OSX, or get VLC Media Player, instructions are at the bottom of the page.
- Click the "Download Now" button, download and install the new player.
When your player is upgraded, start the player to register all components, and then continue to the section below to play the test video file.
To associate files in Windows Media Player, click:
- Start
- All Programs
- Accessories
- Entertainment
- Media player
- When the Media player opens Click on the Menu Bar
- Tools
- Options
- File Types Tab
- Click "Select All" Button at bottom right
- Click OK

Test Your Bandwidth
- Click here to go to the Bandwidth Test page
- Click the "Run Bandwidth Test" in the middle of the page.
- The system will test your connection speed
- If the number reported as the download speed is 384 Kbps or greater, then you have the bandwidth to receive the Medium Quality broadcast.
- If the number reported as the download speed is 768 Kbps or greater, then you have the bandwidth to receive the High Quality broadcast.
- If the Bandwidth comes back below 384 Kbps you do not have enough bandwidth to receive the broadcasts correctly, and this may cause playback problems.
Tuning Your Player
To tune your Windows Media Player, click:
- Start
- All Programs
- Accessories
- Entertainment
- Media player
- When the Media player opens click on the Menu Bar
- Tools
- Options
- Network Tab
- Click the UDP box so there is no check mark in the box
- Close the Player then click
- Start
- All Programs
- Accessories
- Entertainment
- Media player
- when the Media player opens click on the Menu Bar
- Tools
- Options
- Performance Tab
Make sure under "Connection Speed" that the ‘Detect connection’ speed button is selected with a green dot in the circle.
Close your player by clicking the "X" in the upper right corner, then try the sample links under ‘Testing’ above.
Other Options
Click HERE to download VLC media player.
When prompted, click Run. Follow instructions.
